About the Southend Art Club
The Southend Art Club was established in 1929 as The Southend Art Circle with the aim to promote the appreciation and practice of art in the area. It reformed after WW2 as The Southend Sketch Club and assumed its current name in 1969.
The Club has a diverse membership comprising both amateur and professional artists. Annual membership runs from 1st October for which the annual subscription is £30 (plus a £10 joining fee). Although we do not meet weekly to paint together, we hold demonstrations by professional artists on Saturday afternoons at roughly fortnightly intervals.
From October to April two hour demonstrations are held in the lecture theatre at the New Beecroft Art Gallery in Victoria Avenue. During the summer months longer sessions including workshops are held at the Church Hall in Sutton Road. Guests are always welcome to attend sessions at either venue on payment of £5 and then if joining the Club would have this payment deducted from their joining fee. Various social events also take place on a regular baisis.
The Club holds two exhibitions of members work each year and the SOSAC (Southend-on-Sea Arts Council) also offers members entry to its annual exhibition.
Today membership exceeds 200 with several members successfully exhibiting at national level and prominent Art World circles.
Members can have work displayed in the 'Artist of the Month' gallery and also have a link to their own website. The Members area has a forum for discussions and critique to help artists of all levels.
We are always happy to welcome new members and you can find the e-mail addresses of the Membership Secretary and other Committee Members by selecting Contact.
